FOOTBALL WORLD CUP

OLD RIVALS COMING TOGETHER AS HOSTS FOR A GREATER PURPOSE

A Tournament by the Sea

2022 was a great year for football aficionados. Even amongst fellow travellers of Altera, the sporting spirit was alive and kicking. So why not host our own fantasy World Cup to simulate syntopia on the pitch?

Atlas Altera's very own 2022 Men's Association Football World Cup was held on the sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean, hosted by eight nations that previously shared plenty of their own off-pitch rivalries. The tournament played out over the course of a month with live match simulations—filled with excitement, upsets, nail-biting tiebreakers. Matches were complimented by simulated betting for real prizes.

AT THE END OF THE LONG ROAD TO THE CUP, ONLY 96 TEAMS ARE ADMITTED

Grouping and scheduling matches for 96 teams was quite an involved process...

COMMUNITY FUN THROUGH SIMULATED SPORTSBETTING

Playing for Keeps

After the Knockout Rounds, casual fans and fellow travellers alike were invited to engage in a virtual or simulated sportsbetting tournament to follow the tournament to the end. Participation was free. Fictional points were used, but real prizes were up for grabs—such as free merch, map prints, and Patreon memberships.

Setting up live match simulations and a way to calculate the odds for each match was a challenge, but with some some spreadsheet wizardry, fate found a way to entertain. Somebody even figured out how to beat the system...

And How Did Things Play Out?

ALL OF THE GLORY IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS

Indomitable Gallians

As fate would have it, the finals put three teams from Gallia into the limelight. Belgium came out as champions after winning against the title holder France on a 4-2 penalties shootout following a 3–3 draw after extra time.

Though the 2022 World Cup made history in the number of teams represented at the tournament, it was also marked the first time when the top three final positions did not include a team from Crucea. The controversial knockout round format was a constant topic of debate, and it is seems that format changes may be afoot.
