While a political map is not the ideal mode for learning about the world, it is also intuitive and familiar to most people. It is for this reason that the project is centered around a political map as a pragmatic proxy for showcasing diversity of Altera.

The chorographical or regional map of Altera is meant to address issues and contradictions that modern Western geography has in terms of skewing scales of comparison and analytical inconsistencies in knowledge production.

New Ways to see altera

Atlas Altera is worldbuilding in epic proportions. The goal is to tell a more inspired story of humankind.  To appreciate the richness of Altera, geography must be first relearned. At the centre of the project are two maps, one being political and the other regional.

Atlas Altera showcases languages that are either living, endangered, or which are currently being revitalized. By pragmatically turning to the logic of the nation-state model, countless more languages are surfaced.

Though Altera is physically familiar, it also boasts a few fantastical interventions of alternate geography here and there. These changes range from being whimsical in nature to strategic—both from a global climate system and a regional geopolitics standpoint.

Learn about the biomes, climates, river systems, and topography of Altera.  The biogeography of Altera's flora and fauna is also extensively developed, with maps on speculative subdivisions that have yet to even have parallels in the real world.​​​

The dataset and map of Altera lends itself easily to experimental coding. This can yield curious and whimsical games created by the community.

A range of these community-driven games have helped crush real world ennui for countless people, both casual fans and fellow travellers alike.

MAPS AND INFOGRAPHICS FOR AN ALTERA SPORTS SPECTACLE

 

A Dreamt Up World Cup

The irony of sports has always been that, despite inherent competition, there is always the chance of uniting the world. In the summer of 2022, Atlas Altera hosted its own World Cup—the Meditera World Cup.

Dozens of maps and infographics were published in parallel to the real 2022 FIFA World Cup. More importantly, a series of engaging community events took place on the project's Discord server.

 

These events revolved around a multi-week tournament with real prizes to win, with participants experiencing highs and lows based on how the story unfolded for the participating nations.

​

The 2022 Meditera World Cup was not only filled with upsets and unexpected outcomes, but also optimism for a world of where the spotlight is shared by a wider range of players, fans, and everyone in between.
